When it comes to firefighting, having the right equipment can make all the difference. Two critical components in any fire suppression system are layflat hoses and nozzles, both of which ensure that water is delivered effectively to control and extinguish fires.

The Role of Layflat Hoses in Firefighting

Layflat hoses are designed for high-pressure water delivery and are essential for connecting hydrants to fire nozzles. Their flexibility and lightweight design make them easy to store, transport, and rapidly deploy in emergency situations.

In South Africa, we follow the British Standard (BS) for hose connections, meaning all our layflat hoses use a 65mm British Instantaneous Coupling (BIC) for quick and secure attachment.

Layflat hoses are available in three main colours, each serving a different purpose:

  • Red: The most common firefighting hose, designed for high durability and heat resistance.
  • Blue: Used primarily for washdowns in industrial and commercial settings.
  • White (Canvas): Known as a “box hose” due to its affordability, this hose has limited uses and is not as durable as the red variant.

Additionally, layflat hoses come in two sizes:

  • 65mm diameter (standard firefighting hose size)
  • 38mm diameter, often used for smaller applications but still fitted with 65mm BIC couplings.

Nozzles are essential for controlling water flow and directing it effectively onto a fire. The most commonly used nozzles include:

  1. Straight-Through Nozzle (16mm diameter)
    • Simple and effective, this nozzle provides a high-pressure, direct stream for firefighting.
  2. Jet-Spray Adjustable Nozzles (9mm or 16mm orifice)
    • These nozzles have a jet and spray function, with an adjustable lever to shut off water flow.
  3. Curtain Spray Nozzle
    • Provides jet, spray, and curtain spray functions, offering wider coverage and increased protection for firefighters.
  4. Flow-Adjustable Firefighting Nozzles
    • These premium nozzles allow precise flow control and offer multiple spray functions, including curtain spray.
    • More expensive but widely used by professional firefighting teams internationally.

All of the above nozzles are fitted with 65mm BIC couplings, ensuring compatibility with standard layflat hoses and hydrants.

Why Layflat Hoses and Nozzles Are Critical in Emergencies

  • Rapid deployment: Layflat hoses can be quickly unrolled and connected to hydrants.
  • High water flow capability: Essential for effective fire suppression.
  • Durability: Designed to withstand high pressures and extreme conditions.
  • Versatility: Suitable for various fire risks, from industrial fires to structural blazes.
